Shark Tagging Excursion

  • Nova Southeastern University, Oceanographic Center 8000 North Ocean Drive Dania Beach, FL, 33004 United States (map)

What to Expect: Saltwater Studies is going shark tagging! This event is offered in partnership with Nova Southeastern University and the Guy Harvey Research Institute. This event was scheduled to accommodate the high demand for this event this year. This excursion is truly a "hands-on" experience. We will have the opportunity to participate in activities such as prepping the rigging, setting the lines, reeling in the sharks, and even placing the tag onto the shark. Guy Harvey Research members will teach you how to do each task, and you can choose which tasks you would prefer. You will have opportunities to see, touch, and work with the sharks up close. Please note that this type of fishing is difficult so please come prepared to work hard!

Who Can Attend: Participants must be 8 years and older. Children under 13 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

What to Bring:

  • You should wear clothes that you do not mind getting fishy or wet. A towel, bathing suit, sunscreen, and sunglasses are a must. NSU/GHRI will be providing work gloves for us but if you would like to bring your own, you may. We may have a chance to swim (away from the fishing lines) depending on sea conditions so you may also bring swim goggles or a snorkel mask if you would like.

  • Be sure to bring your own lunch and snacks. NSU/GHRI will be providing water for the day but we are to bring our own food.

  • If you are concerned about seasickness, bringing ginger candy (i.e. Gin Gins ginger chews or Trader Joe's candied ginger) is highly recommended as it can help combat nausea.
