Whiskey Creek Wading Tour

  • Mizell-Johnson State Park 6503 North Ocean Drive Dania Beach, FL 33004 United States (map)

BIBLICALLY-BASED EVENT
ONE-TIME EVENT

What to Expect: Participants will be led on a guided wading tour of Whiskey Creek and participate in a FDEP-permitted scientific study. Hand nets and buckets will be used to catch species such as blue crabs, juvenile fish and hermit crabs. Species will then be identified, photographically documented and measured before being returned to the waterway. Following the event, Saltwater Studies will compile recorded data into a report and submit it to the FDEP. This is an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to be involved in citizen science! Please come prepared to get wet! This event will have a maximum of 12 students.

Who Can Attend: Children 4 years old and older. Children under 13 years old must be accompanied and supervised by a parent. All children attending this event must be registered students. Siblings of any age, including infants, littles or older siblings, may not accompany registered students.

What to Bring: Participants should wear their swimsuits, beach attire appropriate for the South Florida sun and bring a filled water bottle. Close-toed water shoes are also highly recommended due to the presence of mud, oysters, barnacles and sharp rocks throughout the survey area.

Where to Meet: Participants will meet at the Marina Pavilion in Mizell-Johnson State Park (6503 North Ocean Drive, Dania Beach, FL 33004). Upon entering the park, drive approximately 1.5 miles and turn left into the marina parking lot. The Marina Pavilion is located along the Intracoastal Waterway in the northwest corner of the marina parking lot just left (west) of the boat ramp.

Cost: $45 per student

Expenses: The park entrance fee is waived for those participating in Saltwater Studies events. Upon arriving at the park, tell the park ranger at the entrance that you are attending a Saltwater Studies event.

Saltwater Studies’ biblically-based events include a discussion on both biological information as well as how we can see the character of God in Creation. Secular events include a neutral presentation that focuses on biological information only.
