Meets once per month on Monday mornings from 9:30 to 11:30 AM at Mizell-Johnson State Park in Dania Beach from September 2024 to May 2025.
This session will be taught by Christa Jewett.
Topics discussed during the school year will include cephalopods (octopuses, squid, nautiluses and cuttlefish), echinoderms (sea stars, sea urchins, sand dollars etc.), jellies, manatees, marine birds, sea turtles, sea slugs and whales.
Includes supplemental curriculum workbook that can be reviewed at home. Podcasts are also available for auditory learners.
Target age is 5 to 12 years
Maximum class size is 12 students
This is a biblically-based class that will include both Scriptural and biological information.
Parents must accompany and supervise their children during class as a safety precaution.
All children attending the class must be registered students. Siblings of any age may not accompany registered students.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Saltwater Studies is excited to offer this full-year comprehensive marine science program for elementary school students that covers marine life commonly seen in Florida’s marine waters. This class series is designed as a two-year program so that topics are unique during that time frame. Students will meet for class once per month at the beach and learn about a different marine animal. Each year includes lessons on four vertebrate and four invertebrate marine animals. Towards the end of the school year, students will enjoy a snorkeling tour in shallow nearshore waters where students can spot marine life discussed during the school year.
For each two-hour class, students will be provided with an overview of the monthly topic followed by a learning activity and beach adventure. During the first hour, a marine biologist will give a overview of the monthly topic supplemented by visual aids, opportunities for students to ask questions and view museum-quality visual aids and specimens. During the second hour, students will enjoy a hands-on learning activity such as a quiz game or experiment followed by a beach or water activity, depending on weather conditions. To supplement students’ in-class learning, each student will be provided with a supplemental curriculum workbook that includes a detailed lesson for each topic, allowing parents to review information at home outside of class. Each workbook lesson includes a graphic overview about the applicable topic, vocabulary, review questions and ideas for various learning activities. Podcasts for each lesson are also available so auditory learners can listen to the lesson being read while following along in their workbooks.

Jellies - Discussion will cover different types of jelly animals including true jellies, hydrozoans, box jellies and comb jellies incorporating various visual aids. Learning activity includes making slime as it has a jelly-like texture. Beach activity includes a shoreline walk where we search for jelly species.

Marine Birds - Discussion will focus on three types of marine birds including seabirds, shorebirds and wading birds incorporating various visual aids. Learning activity includes a review game followed by a shore walk where students will search for different types of marine birds and record their sightings.

Whales - Discussion will highlight various types of baleen whales that incorporates visual aids and specimens from a bowhead whale. Learning activity will review the sizes of different baleen whale species and the beach activity includes a shoreline scavenger hunt.

Echinoderms - Discussion will review various echinoderm species including sea stars sea urchins, sand dollars, sea biscuits, heart urchins and brittle stars incorporating visual aids and various specimens. Learning activity includes a review game followed by a wading tour where we will search for marine life along the shoreline.

Manatees - Discussion will review different species of sea cows including manatees and dugongs incorporating different visual aids. Learning activity will feature a quiz game on manatee facts and the beach activity will include visiting manatee viewing areas.

Sea Slugs - Discussion will provide an overview of different types of sea slugs including sea hares and nudibranchs incorporating different visual aids. Learning activity will include a sea slug bingo game where students will test their knowledge of sea slug anatomy. Beach activity includes a wading tour to search for marine life in the adjacent waterway.

Cephalopods - Discussion will cover different types of cephalopods including squid, octopuses, nautiluses and cuttlefish using visual aids and a variety of specimens. Learning activity will include an experiment on jet propulsion. If there is time available, students will enjoy a beach walk to search for marine life.

Let’s Go Snorkeling! - Students will be provided with a basic overview of snorkeling equipment and safety before being led on a tour of the shallow waters near the park. This is a great opportunity for students to spot some of the marine life that was discussed during the year.

Sea Turtles - Discussion will cover five different species of sea turtles that can be spotted in Florida’s waters incorporating various visual aids. During the learning activity students will use a dichotomous key to identify the different sea turtle species. Beach activity includes a scavenger hunt where students use a field guide to search for marine life along the wrack line.
