Beach Surveying & Assessment

This is a hands-on field trip for students that are in 4th-12th grade. It offers a biblically-based overview of scientific techniques utilized in the assessment of a Sandy Beach Ecosystem. Students will learn how to perform a survey to determine if a beach is gaining or eroding sand, conduct a quantitative biological assessment and identify wave types and measure wave height. Students will provided with all necessary field guides, study materials and equipment but must bring their own writing utensil.

Delray Beach Location: Participants will meet next to the bathrooms at Atlantic Dunes Park located at 1605 S Ocean Blvd, Delray Beach, FL 33483.  The park is north of Linton Blvd. on A1A.  Two parking lots are located on the west side of A1A at a rate of $1.50 per hour.  Coins or credit cards are required to pay the meter.  Cash is not accepted.

Fort Lauderdale Beach Location: Participants will meet at the beach entrance of Hugh Taylor Birch State Park along A1A. It is recommended that you park in Hugh Taylor Birch State Park located at 3109 E Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304. The park entrance fee is $6 per vehicle.
