The Day of Small Things

“For who has despised the day of small things?” Zechariah 4:10a (NKJV)

When shelling it is so easy to become caught up in the search for the largest shell...but look at the beauty present in these tiny sea shells! It reminds me of God's statement in Zechariah 4:10. Big dreams are beautiful and important but we must not get so caught up in them that we resent the work and process (the days of small things) that will ultimately lead to their fulfillment. Big dreams are not often realized overnight. In God's economy, they often require long periods of hard work, sweat, tears, learning, growth and patience before they are fulfilled. It is in these seasons of small things that God forges in us the character required to sustain the fulfillment of our dreams. I once heard a Pastor say: "There is nothing worse than having small character in a big assignment." When we find ourselves in the days of small things, that season of preparation, we must choose to trust the Lord, His process and His promises; remembering that He tells us that those who are faithful with little will be given much (Luke 16:10).
