A Wall of Defense

"See I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before me." Isaiah 49:16 (NKJV)

This is a scrawled cowfish, so named because of its irregular blue markings and the presence of two horns directly above its eyes. The cowfish is a type of boxfish. These animals are different from other bony fish as their bodies are covered with bony plates. These plates are hexagonal in shape and form a type of carapace under the fish's skin that offers it added protection from predators. Cowfish are omnivores, grazing on both vegetation and small invertebrates. They are commonly found hovering near the seafloor in seagrass beds. Cowfish are also able to change color allowing them to blend in with their surroundings when they feel threatened by a predator or diver's presence. Cowfish may grow up to an impressive 22 inches in size. As they are weak swimmers, their bodies can sometimes be found along the seaweed line on beaches following a strong storm.

The uniquely armored body of the cowfish brings to mind the walled cities of biblical times. Representing strength and protection, the wall offered a city's first line of defense against potential invaders. Isn't it interesting that God also compares His protection for His children to the wall of a city? More importantly, in Isaiah 49:16, God states that He is continually concerned with our protection. So often we focus on the many challenges and difficulties that we face and ask ourselves, "Where was God's protection in that situation?" Yet we really have no idea how many situations, circumstances or events that didn't happen because of God's protective hand over our lives. Considering that God states that He is always concerned with our protection, they must be numerous! Praise the Lord for His great concern for His children.
