SECULAR EVENT
ONE-TIME EVENT
What to Expect: Dive into the tiny world of plankton during this exciting hands-on field trip! Students will start by learning about the fascinating differences between zooplankton and phytoplankton — the microscopic organisms that form the foundation of ocean life. Next, we’ll collect our own plankton samples from both the intracoastal and ocean. Afterward, students will use hand-held microscopes to observe their discoveries up close, identifying the incredible creatures they’ve gathered and exploring how these tiny organisms play a big role in the marine ecosystem. This event will have a maximum of 12 students.
Who Can Attend: Children 4 years old and older. Children under 13 years old must be accompanied and supervised by a parent. All children attending this event must be registered students. Siblings of any age, including infants, littles or older siblings, may not accompany registered students.
What to Bring: Participants should wear beach attire appropriate for the South Florida sun and bring a filled water bottle.
Where to Meet: Participants will meet at the Marina Pavilion in Mizell-Johnson State Park (6503 North Ocean Drive, Dania Beach, FL 33004). Upon entering the park, drive approximately 1.5 miles and turn left into the marina parking lot. The Marina Pavilion is located along the Intracoastal Waterway in the northwest corner of the marina parking lot just left (west) of the boat ramp.
Cost: $60 per student
Expenses: The park entrance fee is waived for those participating in Saltwater Studies events. Upon arriving at the park, tell the park ranger at the entrance that you are attending a Saltwater Studies event.
Saltwater Studies’ biblically-based events include a discussion on both biological information as well as how we can see the character of God in Creation. Secular events include a neutral presentation that focuses on biological information only.
