What to Expect: Participants will enjoy exploring one of the few naturally occurring rocky shores in South Florida. This tour begins with a basic overview of the rocky shore ecosystem before we will head out in search of marine life along the waterward side of the rocks. An excellent place to find seashells, participants are encouraged to search in the nooks and crannies of the rock face to find their beach treasures. Our tour will conclude at the south end of the park where we will explore a series of tide pools at low tide. Come prepared to scramble!
Blowing Rocks Preserve is a conservation area maintained by The Nature Conservancy. It is the longest stretch of limestone shoreline on the Atlantic Coast in the United States. Seawater has eroded tunnels in the rocks that funnel water into shooting plumes at high tide. Depending on the tide levels, these plumes can reach up to 50 feet tall! The rocks also provide a habitat for a variety of shoreline creatures, giving a great opportunity to explore this shoreline’s nooks, crannies and tide pools in search of marine life.
Who Can Attend: All ages are welcome to attend although the beach walk is not recommended for children under 4 years of age. Children under 13 years old must be accompanied and supervised by a parent.
What to Bring: As the waves constantly crash against the rocks, creating salt spray even at low tide, YOU WILL GET WET! It is recommended that participants wear swimsuits under their clothes and beach appropriate footwear. Shoes are required as the rough limestone can be sharp in various places. Personal items such as electronic devices, wallets or cameras must be sealed in plastic, waterproof bags or left in a safe place in your vehicle. Food is not allowed at the Preserve so please plan accordingly. There is a public park just 1 mile south of the Preserve where you can eat lunch.
Where to Meet: Participants will meet in the parking lot at the Hawley Education Center on the west side of Beach Road at Blowing Rocks Preserve (574 South Beach Road, Hobe Sound, FL 33455-2804).
Cost: $25 per person
Expenses: Blowing Rocks Preserve charges a $2 per person entry fee for anyone 12 years old and older. Cash will be required to pay this fee upon entering the Preserve.
