Class Update

This month’s activities include a guest speaker! Cara Abbott will be teaching your class as she specializes in coastal marine ecosystems such as the coastal hammock.

Meeting Location

Mizell-Johnson State Park, 6503 N Ocean Dr, Dania Beach, FL 33004
We will be meeting at the Marina Pavilion located on the west side of the park. Upon entering the park, follow the signs to the marina. There will be a left turn into the marina parking lot about 1 mile after the park entrance. When you enter the marina parking lot, the paved path to the Marina Pavilion is in the northwest corner of the parking lot, just left of the boat ramps.

Entrance Fee: The park entrance fee for this event has been waived. Upon arriving at the park entrance, tell the park ranger that you are attending a Saltwater Studies event.

 

Class Topic & Activity

Students will learn about flora and fauna in a coastal hammock, a broad-leaved forest that grows on stabilized sand dunes along the coast. Species discussed will include sea grapes, butterflies, and reptiles. The day’s activity will include a trail hike through a coastal hammock.

Appropriate Attire

Please have your children wear beach-appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes and bring a filled water bottle.

Recommended “Go” Bag

This class series is an adventure in exploration! While we have an outline and plan for our school year, activities might change depending on conditions on the day of our class. We encourage you to create a Saltwater Studies “Go” Bag for your student and bring it with you to each class to ensure that you are prepared for whatever the day brings. We recommend your bag include:

  • Swimsuit

  • Beach appropriate attire

  • Towel

  • Change of clothes

  • Close-toed water shoes

  • Mask & Snorkel

  • Mesh Collection Bag

  • Filled Water Bottle

  • Sunscreen

  • Sun Hat
