Meeting Location
Meeting Location: Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center, 890 NE Ocean Blvd, Stuart, FL 34996. We will meet at the front of the facility and then walk across the street to Stuart Beach for our morning lesson. We will visit the Oceanographic Center during the afternoon portion of our class.
Entrance Fee: Saltwater Studies will pay the students' entrance fee for this event. For adults and siblings looking to enjoy the aquarium, the cost is $18 per person.
Facility Amenities: Stuart Beach is absolutely beautiful! The park where we will be meeting has covered pavilions, a basketball court, restroom facilities and outdoor showers. There is also a Publix grocery store directly across the street. The Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center includes a large outdoor aquarium pond, stingray tank, touch tanks and a recently constructed indoor aquarium facility. There is also a boardwalk that leads through the mangroves to the Indian River Lagoon.
Class Topic
This month we will be discussing sharks. We will spend the morning discussing the topic and reviewing the homework assignment. We will also complete a shark tooth laboratory where students will learn to identify different sharks based on the shape of their teeth and estimate total body length based on tooth size. Students must bring their notes from their completed homework assignment with them to class so that they can participate in the class discussion.
Water or Beach Activity
Beach or Water Activity
Students will enjoy a tour of the marine life and aquariums at the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center. Students will be able to pet and feed stingrays, observe a lagoon fish feeding program and view a variety of marine life including sea turtles and local fish and invertebrate species such as seahorses, nurse sharks and even an eel.
Appropriate Attire: Students should wear beach-appropriate casual clothing. While our class activities do not include getting wet, we are meeting at a beach park for our class discussion. Students may visit the beach during lunchtime if they prefer. Students must also bring their own lunch and a filled water bottle.
