This event is a make up for November’s Peanut Island Snorkel activity that had to be rescheduled due to the weather. It will be a little different than other classes held during the school year.
There is no homework assignment for this event as we have completed all of the lessons associated with the class schedule. Participants will be provided with an overview of local marine life that can be spotted in the area before being led on a guided snorkel of the waters around Peanut Island.
Parents and siblings of registered students are welcome to participate along with the students. Please note that any sibling who elects to participate that is under 13 years of age must be accompanied on the snorkel by a parent or adult guardian. Parents must be prepared to be in the water with their children.
All participants, parents, registered students and siblings, will be required to wear a snorkel vest provided by Saltwater Studies during the snorkel tour.
Saltwater Studies will pay the shuttle fee for registered students. Parents and siblings will need to pay the shuttle fee themselves if they would like to join us on Peanut Island.
Our class will be leaving promptly on the 10 AM shuttle to maximize our time in the water when the tides offer the best visibility.
Saturday mornings are busy at Peanut Island. It is recommended that you arrive 15-30 minutes before the shuttle is scheduled to depart to give yourself time to find parking and walk to the shuttle dock.
If you would like to stay on the island after the snorkel tour is finished you are welcome to do so. The last shuttle leaves the island at 5 PM.
Meeting Location
Meeting Location: Riviera Beach City Marina, 200 E 13th St, Riviera Beach, FL 33404. We will meet at the Peanut Island Shuttle.
Entrance Fee: The Peanut Island Shuttle charges a fee for transportation to the island. The cost is $20 plus tax for adults and $10 plus tax for children ten years old and under. Cash or credit card is accepted. Saltwater Studies will cover the shuttle cost for registered students. Parents and siblings will be responsible to pay their fee directly to Peanut Island Shuttle if they would like to visit the island.
Facility Amenities: Peanut Island Park is located on the intracoastal waterway and offers a fun environment for swimming in a calm water area. Park amenities include a covered picnic tables, outdoor showers and bathrooms.
What to Bring:
There are no concessions on the island. Be sure to bring water, drinks, snacks and lunch with you.
If you are planning on staying on Peanut Island after our event is finished, please be sure to bring everything that you would need for a visit to the beach such as towels, lawn chairs, umbrellas, sand toys, etc.
Water or Beach Activity
Students will be led on a guided snorkel in the waters around Peanut Island, weather permitting. Students will be able to view an artificial reef that is home to a variety of corals and is a part of a monitored research project.
Appropriate Attire: Students must wear their swimsuits and beach-appropriate clothing and bring their own snorkel and mask. Swim fins are not allowed during Saltwater Studies events, but water shoes are recommended as an alternative. All students will be required to wear snorkel vests provided by Saltwater Studies as a safety precaution.
Please make sure that your child wears the appropriate clothing for our class. If your child does not have the appropriate attire (i.e. swimming suit, water shoes or snorkel gear) to complete the planned activity, unfortunately he or she will not be able to participate.
