This Month’s Activities

Next Class: Tuesday, September 16, 2025 | 1:00 - 3:00 PM

(Page last updated: Wednesday, July 23, 2025)

Meeting Location

Mizell-Johnson State Park, 6503 N Ocean Dr, Dania Beach, FL 33004
We will meet at the Pelican Pavilion, if available. The Pelican Pavilion is located in the second to last parking lot (Parking Lot #5) at the far north of the park, across from the entrance to the U.S. Coast Guard facility.

Park administration has informed us that the bathroom located between the Osprey and Leatherback Pavilions is being renovated, making the nearby pavilions where we normally meet inaccessible for the remainder of the year. Please be sure to check the class website each month to confirm our meeting location in the park as we will have to adjust based on weather conditions and pavilion availability.

Entrance Fee: The park entrance fee has been waived for this event. Upon entering the park, tell the park ranger at the entrance that you are attending a Saltwater Studies event.

Class Topic & Learning Activity

This month we will be discussing dolphins. Class discussion will provide an overview of toothed whales focusing on oceanic dolphins while incorporating various visual aids. For the learning activity students will complete a worksheet that reviews dolphin anatomy and/or enjoy a game on dolphin behaviors, depending on time available.

Water or Beach Activity

The beach activity includes a scavenger hunt where students use a field guide to identify marine life.

Appropriate Attire: It is always recommended that you come to class prepared to get wet. Have your child wear his or her swimsuit, beach-appropriate clothing, water shoes and bring a filled water bottle.

Please make sure that your child wears the appropriate clothing for our class. If your child does not have the appropriate attire (i.e. swimming suit, water shoes or snorkel gear) to complete the planned activity, unfortunately he or she will not be able to participate.
