Meeting Location

Mizell-Johnson State Park, 6503 N Ocean Dr, Dania Beach, FL 33004
We will be meeting at the Jetty Pavilion located at the far north end of the park. Upon entering the park, follow the main park road approximately 2.5 miles and turn right into the Jetty parking lot. The entrance to the Jetty parking lot is directly across from Nova Southeastern University, Oceanographic Center.

Entrance Fee: The park entrance fee has been waived for this event. Upon entering the park, tell the park ranger at the entrance that you are attending a Saltwater Studies event.

Class Topic & Learning Activity

This month we will be discussing sponges. Class discussion will review types of sponges while incorporating visual aids and various specimens. Students will review specimens with microscopes and then for the learning activity enjoy a game called “Is that a Sponge?” where students will review specimens and differentiate between corals and sponges.

Water or Beach Activity

The beach activity includes walking along the beach and searching for sponges along the wrack line.

Appropriate Attire: It is always recommended that you come to class prepared to get wet. Have your child wear his or her swimsuit, beach-appropriate clothing, water shoes and bring a filled water bottle.

Please make sure that your child wears the appropriate clothing for our class. If your child does not have the appropriate attire (i.e. swimming suit, water shoes or snorkel gear) to complete the planned activity, unfortunately he or she will not be able to participate.
