(Page last updated: Wednesday, April 16, 2025)
Meeting Location
Mizell-Johnson State Park, 6503 N Ocean Dr, Dania Beach, FL 33004
We will meet at the Pelican Pavilion, if available. The Pelican Pavilion is located in the second to last parking lot (Parking Lot #5) at the far north of the park, across from the entrance to the U.S. Coast Guard facility.
Due to construction activities in the park, our normal meeting locations, the Osprey and Leatherback Pavilions, are no longer available to us for the remainder of the school year. Please be sure to check the class website for information on where we will be meeting in the park each month as we adjust to the construction activities.
Entrance Fee: The park entrance fee has been waived for this event. Upon entering the park, tell the park ranger at the entrance that you are attending a Saltwater Studies event.
Class Topic & Learning Activity
This month we will be discussing sea turtles. Class discussion will cover five different species of sea turtles that can be spotted in Florida’s waters incorporating various visual aids. During the learning activity students will use a dichotomous key to identify the different sea turtle species.
Water or Beach Activity
Beach activity includes a scavenger hunt where students use a field guide to search for marine life along the wrack line.
Appropriate Attire: It is always recommended that you come to class prepared to get wet. Have your child wear his or her swimsuit, beach-appropriate clothing, water shoes and bring a filled water bottle.
Please make sure that your child wears the appropriate clothing for our class. If your child does not have the appropriate attire (i.e. swimming suit, water shoes or snorkel gear) to complete the planned activity, unfortunately he or she will not be able to participate.
