$30.00

BIBLICALLY-BASED EVENT

Registration Deadline: Thursday, May 9, 2024

Date: Thursday, May 16, 2024
Time: 9:30-11:30 AM
Age Group: 5 years and older

For this event, participants will be led on a guided wading tour of Whiskey Creek and participate in a FDEP-permitted scientific study. Saltwater Studies will give participants an overview of the importance of Whiskey Creek, the animals that call the area home and procedures for the scientific study. Students will then be divided into groups of five (5) and be provided with dip nets and buckets that will be used to catch species such as blue crabs, juvenile fish and hermit crabs. The groups will then head to Whiskey Creek where they will search for and catch marine life. Each animal caught will be identified, photographically documented and measured before being returned to the waterway. Following the event, Saltwater Studies will compile recorded data into a report and submit it to the FDEP. This is an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to be involved in citizen science! Please come prepared to get wet!

  • All students must be accompanied by a parent. One parent in each group will be asked to assist in ensuring that all marine life caught is brought to Saltwater Studies for cataloguing.

  • Participants should wear beach attire appropriate for the South Florida sun. Water shoes are highly recommended as areas of Whiskey Creek can have algae-covered sediment. Oysters and rocks may also be present that could injure your feet.

  • Participants must bring their own water and snacks.

  • Participants will meet in the southeast corner of Parking Lot #2 located in Mizell-Johnson State Park (formerly John U. Lloyd Beach State Park) in Dania Beach, Florida (6503 North Ocean Drive, Dania Beach, FL 33004). We will be meeting in the picnic area near the BG Whiskey Creek Hideout restaurant and rental facility.

  • The park entrance fee has been waived for this event. Upon arrival at the park, please tell the park ranger at the gate that you are attending a Saltwater Studies event.

Saltwater Studies’ biblically-based events include a discussion on both biological information as well as how we can see the character of God in Creation.
