Water Safety Officer (Part-Time Contract Position)

The Position

Saltwater Studies offers snorkeling tours as a part of its field courses for middle and high school students. We are looking for a part-time water safety officer who can assist the lead instructor during the snorkeling tours. Saltwater Studies snorkel season is from April to November of each year. Each field course includes two snorkeling classes, one at the beginning of the school year and a second at the end of the school year. Other events may also be added based on client requests.

This position includes going on snorkeling tours with Saltwater Studies classes, assisting students who need help with swimming or troubleshooting gear issues. You will help the lead instructor keep the group together and encourage students to have an overall positive snorkeling experience. Each snorkeling tour will be approximately two to three hours and include up to one and half hours in the water.

The following schedule includes tentative dates for snorkeling activities for the 2024/2025 school year. These dates may be changed based on water and weather conditions predicted for the day of the class.

This is a contract position.

Saltwater Studies will provide necessary safety equipment for the position including a rash guard/swim shirt to be worn during the tours, lifeguard rescue can, dive flag and first aid supplies.

Saltwater Studies was founded in 2011 and offers biblically based and secular marine science education to people of all ages.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Must be a strong swimmer who is comfortable in ocean conditions that include waves and currents.

  • Must be able to snorkel without using fins as fins are not allowed on Saltwater Studies tours.

  • Must be certified and have experience in water safety and rescue. Acceptable certifications include Lifeguard Certification or PADI Rescue Diver Certification, etc.

  • Must have a current CPR/First Aid Certificate from the Red Cross or other reputable certifying agency.

  • Must be able to demonstrate swimming and snorkeling proficiency.

  • Must be capable of towing one person on a lifeguard rescue can without fins against current.

  • Must have dive mask and snorkel for use during the tours.

  • Must have reliable transportation to and from the dive sites.

The right candidate for this position will be a person of integrity who displays situational awareness and is sensitive to the needs of others. He or she must also have a positive and calm demeanor, especially in difficult circumstances, as attitude and response to a student who feels uncomfortable or is having an emergency can either escalate or deescalate a tense situation.

It is also preferred that the candidate has a relationship with Jesus Christ and experience serving in a ministry or church setting.

Compensation

  • $25/hour

  • Saltwater Studies will also pay the Peanut Island Shuttle fee on the days of the snorkeling events.
