Sea Shell Collection & Identification Tour

  • Tigertail Beach 430 Hernando Drive Marco Island, FL, 34145 United States (map)

What to Expect: Participants will be led on a beach walk to collect shells on beautiful Tigertail Beach in Marco Island. Known for its white sand beaches and stunning turquoise water as well as its abundance of marine life, this beach is a must-see hot spot of the Florida West Coast. The beach walk will be followed by a lunch break. After lunch, participants will be offered an overview on the basics of shell identification and will be provided with assistance in identifying the shells they collected. This will be a long field trip that requires a lot of walking. The majority of shells are located on a barrier beach approximately 0.25 to 0.50 miles from the parking lot. Depending on the tide level, participants may be required to walk across a shallow lagoon to reach the beach. Participants should be prepared to walk at least 2 miles on the beach.

Who Can Attend: All ages are welcome to attend although the beach walk is not recommended for small children. Children under 13 years old must be accompanied and supervised by a parent.

What to Bring: It is recommended that you do not bring anything that cannot be left in your car or carried for the duration of the beach walk. You must also bring your own bag or bucket to carry your shells, lunch, drinks and snacks. An alternative option is to purchase your lunch at the beach as there is a Café there which sells sandwiches and snacks.
