Instagram Pics - Spotted Scorpionfish.jpg

"I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well." Psalm 139:14 (NKJV)

At first glance, you may think that this picture is nothing more than an algae-covered boulder. Wait! Take another look! If you look closely you will see a masterfully-camouflaged spotted scorpionfish resting among the seaweed. Although you may not have seen one on a snorkel trip, spotted scorpionfish are one of the most common species of scorpionfish found in the Atlantic and Caribbean region. They frequently inhabit the relatively shallow waters around coral reefs and rocky shorelines, lying motionless against the substrate. These fish are ambush or lie-in-wait predators, resting against the seafloor until a fish or small crustacean is within striking distance. Their large mouths are highly efficient at sucking in and swallowing hapless prey. As their name suggests, spotted scorpionfish are venomous. The spines of their dorsal fins are capable of injecting venom as a defensive mechanism when the fish is attacked.

One of the most interesting features of the spotted scorpionfish is how their body is specifically designed to allow them to thrive within their habitat. Their external camouflage brings to mind the ghillie suit of a military sniper. Their mottled coloration, complete with fleshy body extensions called cirri, is highly effective at masking their shape and identity. Their mouth points upwards in a superior position allowing them to easily snag food above them while resting on the seafloor. And if they find themselves in need of a rapid escape, their powerful, truncated tail fin is well-designed for quick bursts of speed and evasive maneuvers. This fish has everything that it needs in order to survive in its environment, a fact that displays detailed attention and planning by a meticulous engineer. And just as God meticulously designed the spotted scorpionfish, He also devoted the same detailed attention when creating you! God specifically created you with the personality, abilities and giftings that you need to accomplish the purpose that He has for you.
