Sea Shell LabSea Shell Collection and Identification Laboratory

Duration: 1.5 hours
Age Group: All Ages

Participants are provided with a biblically-based overview of gastropods (snails) and bivalves (clams) focusing on identification of various species.  Following the discussion, participants are provided with a variety of Florida shell species and an identification guide to assist them in identifying local species.  This laboratory can be tailored to all age groups.  Younger students will be provided with a picture-based, numbered field guide along with basic shell species.  Older students will be provided with a more detailed guide and more challenging species to identify.  Students will provided with all necessary water samples, field guides, laboratory materials and equipment but must bring their own writing utensil.

Water Quailty AssessmentWater Quality Assessment Laboratory

Duration: 1.5 hours
Age Group: 4th-12th Grade

This laboratory offers a biblically-based overview of environmental health and conservation or water resources. Students will learn how to analyze water samples for various parameters such as turbidity, dissolved oxygen and pH.  Students will provided with all necessary water samples, field guides, laboratory materials and equipment but must bring their own writing utensil. 

Cost: $15.00 per student 

 

Shark Demonstration 2Spiny Dogfish Shark Dissection (Demonstration)

Duration: 1 hour
Age Group: 5 – 7 years

Participants will be led in a demonstration of a Spiny Dogfish Shark dissection.  Students will be permitted to touch the specimen but will not be allowed to utilize any dissection tools during the course of the laboratory.  This dissection will include a biblically-based discussion on shark anatomy that will emphasize the shark’s specialized design that allows it to thrive in the marine environment.

Shark DissectionSpiny Dogfish Shark Dissection

Duration: 1.5 hours
Age Group: 3rd-12th Grade

Participants will be led in the dissection of a Spiny Dogfish Shark specimen, working in groups of 3 to 4 students.  This dissection will include a biblically-based discussion on shark anatomy that will emphasize the shark’s specialized design that allows it to thrive in the marine environment.  Participants will be provided with all necessary dissection equipment and specimens.

Comparative Anatomy Dissection

Duration: 2.5 hours
Age Group:
8 – 12 years

Students will be led in the dissection of three different specimens including an invertebrate such as a sea star, bony fish such as a sea perch and cartilaginous fish such as a skate.  Dissection specimens will depend on specimen availability at the time of purchase.  Students will work in groups of four to dissect and compare their specimens. The laboratory will include biblically-based discussion with particular emphasis on how each organism is perfectly designed to survive in its unique environment.
