Classes

 

REMINDER: As of June 1, 2017 new class rates apply for all participants three years of age and older. For homeschool families, there will be no fee for parents accompanying their students participating in class or for children under three years of age who are not participating in the class and are supervised by a parent.

 

Saltwater Studies offers a variety of classes to accommodate students 3 to 14 years of age.

Locations:  These classes are offered regularly in both Palm Beach and Broward County through homeschool groups or co-ops such as Classical Conversations (CC), on demand as one time events for any group or even remotely via Skype at a time that is convenient for you.  The minimum group size varies from 6-10 students, depending on location.

Cost:  The cost for these classes is $12 per person for a one hour class and $20 per person for a two hour class. Saltwater Studies also offers a 25% sibling discount.  There may also be an additional fee for classes offered more than a 1-hour drive away from Saltwater Studies’ location in Delray Beach, Florida.

All About Sea Turtles!

This class provides a biblically-based overview of sea turtles.  Students will learn all about various sea turtle species as well as what is being done to help protect their populations.  This interactive class incorporates both lecture, group discussion and an interactive project.

 

Animal Adaptations: Why Organisms Live Where They Do

Have you ever wondered why marine animals live where they do?  Why do coral reefs only live in tropical waters?  Why do red fish live in the deep sea?  Why do polar bears only live in the Arctic Circle?  This class will provide a biblically-based overview on abiotic (non-living) and biotic (living) factors that dictate species distribution in the world ocean.  This interactive class incorporates both lecture, group discussion and games.

 

Animal, Plant or Mineral?

Some of the strangest and most interesting marine organisms live in the ocean.  This interactive class will identify numerous unique organisms while challenging the students to identify if it is an animal, plant or a mineral in nature.  This interactive class incorporates games, lecture and group discussion.

 

Biblical Environmentalism

Environmental health is an ever important topic in our current society.  This class will include a discussion on what biblical environmentalism looks like and how it differs from the “nature worship” often seen in our society today.  The class will include lecture, student-led discussions and a group project.

 

Coral Reefs: The Ocean’s Apartment Complexes

One of the most beautiful marine environments, coral reefs are a complex system that balances interactions between marine species.  This class will provide a biblically-based overview of the coral reef ecosystem, discussing how reefs are formed, different types of reefs and species interactions present in reef systems.  This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.

 

Feeding Frenzy: Feeding Methods of Marine Animals

God has provided marine creatures with some interesting means of obtaining nutrition.  Covering everything from camouflaged lie-in-wait predators to bubble nets to filter feeding, this class will provide a biblically-based overview of feeding habits in marine animals.  This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.  As a special highlight, students will also be able to see a piece of baleen obtained from a filter-feeding whale.

 

Find that Organism!

This is a hands-on laboratory that will challenge participants to identify various marine organisms in an interactive game-like format.  Students will be given a description of a marine organism and challenged to match the description with specimens of various marine organisms collected from beaches around the world.  This class also incorporates both lecture and group discussion.

 

Friends Forever: Symbiotic Relationships in Marine Animals

The Bible says that the character of God is displayed throughout all Creation.  The Bible also tells us that Jesus is our friend.  Therefore, we should not be surprised to see some unusual friendships present throughout nature.  This class will provide a biblically-based lecture on common symbiotic relationships between marine animals.  This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.

 

It’s a Worm’s World

This class will explore the fascinating world of marine worms which are some of the most beautiful and bizarre creatures ever to inch, squirm or hide in the ocean.  This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.

 

Mangrove Forests: Environmental Adaptation Perfected

Have you ever seen a mangrove forest?  While it may just appear to be a tangled mess of branches and tree limbs, this ecosystem was perfectly created for its very harsh environment.  The fingerprints of God are seen throughout every organism present in this system as their special characteristics allow them to thrive in an environment that few other organisms can tolerate.  This class will provide a biblically-based overview of the mangrove ecosystem, focusing on the amazing adaptations of the species that live there.  This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.

 

My Favorite Things

This class is all about our students!  Students will be asked to provide their favorite marine biology related questions or favorite marine species that they would like to learn more about.  Submittals for students taking the class must be provided to Saltwater Studies via email one week prior to the scheduled session.  Saltwater Studies will combine the student favorites and provide a biblically-based class discussing these topics.  This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.

 

Ocean’s Craziest Creatures

This is one of our students’ favorite classes!  God’s creation is full of unique and wonderfully designed creatures.  Some of the most amazing animals God created live in the ocean.  This class will provide a biblically-based introduction to some of the ocean’s most interesting creatures, including everything from the sea cucumber to sharks.  This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.

 

Ocean’s Craziest Creatures – Part 2

Since our students cannot get enough of this class, we’ve added even MORE crazy creatures to our list.  Join us for the Ocean’s Craziest Creatures – Part 2 as we continue to explore more of God’s unique and wonderfully designed creatures.  This class will provide a biblically-based introduction to some of the ocean’s most interesting creatures, including everything from the hagfish to the blobfish.  This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.

 

Ocean Movements

This class will provide a biblically-based overview of ocean currents, waves and tides highlighting some of the most extreme events in the world!  This interactive class incorporates lecture, group discussion and video illustrations.

 

Praise to the Lord from Creation

This class is based on Psalm 150:6 which commands all living things to praise the Lord.  It will provide students with an overview of sound production in different types of marine animals including types of fish, whales, and crustaceans.  This interactive class incorporates lecture, group discussion and video illustrations.

 

Record Breakers: Marine Animals that Defy Odds

God has created some amazing creatures that live in the world ocean.  This class will provide a biblically-based overview of those marine animals that swim the fastest, jump the highest, eat the most, or pack the biggest punch. This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.

 

Sea Shell Identification Laboratory

This class is a biblically-based hands-on laboratory which guides students in the identification of common Florida sea shells.  Sea shells and field guides will be provided for student use during the class.  The class includes a lecture as an introduction to sea shell identification as well as individual and group activities.  We recommend that children under the age of 8 years old be accompanied by a parent so that the parent can provide help with the field guide.

 

Seals, Sea Lions & Walruses

This class provides a biblically-based overview of pinnipeds or flipper-footed animals such as seals, sea lions and walruses. Students will be introduced to a variety of different species as well as interesting facts about their behavior and other capabilities. This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.

 

Sharks: The Perfect Predator

Humans have had a long-term fascination with sharks.  In this class we will discuss how God created this perfect predator.  Students will be provided with a biblically-based introduction to common shark species, predation methods and record breaking statistics regarding some of the amazing feats that sharks are capable of performing.  This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.

 

The Ocean & the Bible

Over 70% of our world is covered by water, the majority of which is represented by the world ocean.  With the ocean being such a dominant feature of our planet, we should not be surprised that the Bible has a lot to say about it too.  This class reviews what the Bible says about the marine environment.  Topics of discussion will include the sea serpent, “Leviathan” described in Job 41, the oceanic impact of Noah’s Flood, and the characteristics of God displayed through His creation of the ocean and its creatures.  The class will include lecture, student-led discussions and a group project.  Students must bring their Bibles with them to this class as they will be needed for the group project.

 

Things that Sting

This class will provide a biblically-based overview of the Phylum Cnidaria which includes some of the most venomous creatures in the world – the jellies (also known as jellyfish).  Students will learn about amazing creatures such as the Lion’s Mane Jelly that grows up to 8 feet in diameter and the Box Jelly that is capable of delivering a sting that can kill a human.  This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.

 

Things that Sting – Part Two

This class will provide a biblically-based overview of a variety of vertebrate marine animals that are capable of producing a toxic sting.  Students will learn about creatures such as stingrays, lionfish and stonefish.  This interactive class incorporates lecture, group discussion and video presentations.

 

Through the Eyes of the Creator

According to the Bible, the Lord made all of Creation to testify of Himself and display His personal love for us.  This class will focus on how the Lord views His creation, how we can identify His character in His Creation and how He uses it as a way to interact with His children.  This interactive class incorporates activities, lecture and group discussion.

 

Top Ten Strangest Teleosts!

This class will review ten of the strangest teleosts (bony fish) in the sea.  Reviewing everything from the Oarfish to the Pacific Barrel-eye, students will be amazed at the creativity in the Lord’s Creation.  This interactive class incorporates lecture, video illustrations and group discussion.

 

Whales, Dolphins & Wholphins, Oh My!

This class provides a biblically-based overview of some of the world’s most exciting and interesting mammals. Students will be introduced to a variety of whale and dolphin species as well as interesting facts about their behavior and other capabilities. This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.  As a special highlight, students will also be able to see baleen and vertebrae obtained from a Bowhead whale.

 

What’s Down There?

The average depth of the ocean is more than 12,000 feet; an area so deep and dark that it is home to some of the weirdest creatures in the world.  This class will include a biblically-based overview of the deep ocean and the amazing animals that live there such as the Giant and Colossal Squid, anglerfish, sleeper sharks and more! This interactive class incorporates both lecture and group discussion.
